The holidays are almost here and meal service must go on! For many families, school meals are essential. Long breaks away from school can lead to increased food insecurity for millions of children, not knowing when or where their next meal will come from. With the help of USDA waivers and community assistance programs, several school districts are providing students with a week’s worth of meals and more this Thanksgiving. Here a just a few examples from districts across the country and what they will be doing this year:
Dallas ISD, Texas
Schools in the Dallas Independent School District will continue serving meals during the break. As a special giveaway, they will also be providing a free roasted turkey with sides and a 30lb Farmers to Families food box to all families in their community, while supplies last.
The School District of Palm Beach County, Florida
Palm Beach Schools is serving their students with six days worth of meals. For each day, the meal kit will include breakfast, lunch, supper, and a snack. In addition to this, they’ll be giving away 10-12lb boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables to families, while supplies last.
Houston ISD, Texas
Houston Independent School District is preparing seven days worth of meals for all eligible students for curbside pickup. All pickups during the month of November will also come with free essential hygiene kits and cleaning supplies.
Fulton County Schools, Georgia
This district is providing a full school week’s worth of meals (5 breakfasts and 5 lunches) for all children to be picked up the Friday before Thanksgiving.
